Why do they give carrots to a bride-to-be in Spain?

I was in a restaurant the other night in Spain where a "hen party" was taking place and the bride-to-be was presented with a large bunch of carrots. Is this a Spanish tradition? If so, what's the significance of carrots? Sadly, our Spanish was just good enough to ask the question but not good enough to understand the answer!
