New York City at Christmas & New Year

I'm thinking of staying at the Waldorf=Astoria in New York City over Christmas and the New Year. Has anyone been? Also, what are the best things to do / not do in NYC over the holiday period? Thanks.

I stayed in the Waldorf for 3 days in May - it's a gorgeous hotel,,,,,you'll love it!

A friend of mine was in NY for New Year last year - he said if you want to be in Times Square for the bells (or the ball drop which they have there) that you need to be there early, like 3 in the afternoon, because they stop any more entries after about seven o'clock.
