Because Christians believe he was both man and god. The important bit is probably the man bit, because it makes god accessible.

The cornerstone of the Christian faith is that Jesus, Son of God, came to earth to be born of a human woman, and thus be Son of Man (i.e. human) and then for his earthly body to die, in order to take away all the 'human' sin to heaven, and free Mankind for ever.
