in my opinion, not the nicest part of London but like most areas, I'm sure it has good and bad parts.
I came down from oop North to work on a project in Southwark for a year and of course knew nothing about different parts of London. I found the folk okay and the local pub was great - however when my boss found out that after working late I was walking alone to the local tube she told me not to do this and the company would pay for a door to door cab!!
Over reaction on your boss's part Craft1948. There are far too many scare stories about regarding London and where's safe and where isn't.

Street crime is at a very low level, this is official figures published last year. It just doesn't serve the likes of the Daily Mail to report that. There are elderly people all over the place who are terrified to go out after dark. This is as a result of shock horror reporting. One crime happens and it will be bound to be reported. Millions of people go out on London's streets every day and night and don't get attacked.

There is nowhere in London that I would be bothered about wandering about, during the day or at night. And I'll never see 50 again.

Come down here and enjoy your stay

Have a nice trip
It's a great area - with Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe and the brilliant Menier Chocolate Factory (theatre/restaurant) close by. You're very central - just minutes over the Millennium Bridge to St Paul's. As the other person said: ignore all the fears engendered by the Daily Mail etc and enjoy!
also if you really want to know this sort of info about an area you can go on http://www.landsearch.net/services.asp for their NP1 service that provides such details
