Where's a friendly place to live in the UK?

We've recently moved from the South West to a Worcestershire village. I have to say I'm shocked by how much people keep themselves to themselves here. Having been used to a decent social life, we moved up here to live in a village and have hardly seen a soul since we moved in. When you try and chat to people they seem rather taken aback. We had something delivered the other day and the chap who delivered said he'd lived in the same village for 20 years and didn't know his neighbours from two doors down 'that's how people are around here'. We don't have children, we don't go to church and we recently lost our beloved dog, so some methods of socialising are already out for us. But we had plenty of friends before. Before you take me to task for moaning, I'm not taking a pop at the people here, I'm sure they're super, just very insular. I was just wondering, where's a nice friendly open hearted place to live in the UK. Any suggestions?

1955 was very friendly, I believe, but not sure how you could get there now.
Well, Brighton is a bit of a big, happy village.

I should think a lot of seaside resorts are quite jolly, because it's like being on holiday all the time.

The old community spirit is dying out now bizzy. When we moved here almost 30 years ago everyone looked out for each other. There were coffee/tea mornings etc but people move away or pass on things bringin in new neighbours with different outlooks. Our little community is now young couples or young mums going out to work and I suppose they just dont have the time or are maybe too tired to interact with neighbours. On our block of 5 homes I was the youngest when we moved in and now Im the oldest along with my friend next door. In total there's only 8 of us "Oldies" around. I dont mean age but the number of years we've lived here.

I live in a village in Lancashire, about 7 miles from Preston. We have a great community spirit. I'd only lived here a couple of years when a friend of mine commented that I knew more people in the village than she did in the area where she's lived her whole life. I don't think Mr Spudqueen would live anywhere else now,
You surely can't be thinking of moving again just yet.

How are you at amateur dramatics - acting, directing, lighting, wardrobe, props, music, sound, backstage management, front-of-house, publicity?
It's impossible to remain aloof in an activity where everyone has to be outgoing and sometimes make asses of themselves, always forgiven.
I agree with Mani, go up north. Though in some places you have the neighbours popping in and out all day for a chat!! Whenever I go back 'home' it's like I've never been away and you get chatting at the bus stop, chatting in the shops, get invited out to the pub....
Spudqueen....where in Lancs are you? I am also in a village near Preston (Kirkham) are you near me or the other side of Preston?

It is very friendly here by the way bizzylizzy :)
daffy - I'm on the north side of Preston, so not too far from you. We're 15 miles from Blackpool. If I press my face against the back bedroom window on a clear day I can just see Blackpool Tower in the distance!
leicestershire, moved here 6yrs ago from London no regrets what so ever, it has a lot 2 offer an you are in the heart of England
I agree with spudqueen, Lancashire is fantastic.and there is so much to do and places to see. I live on the outskirts of Manchester and the people are absolutely lovely. When I moved here 20 years ago from the south coast, it took me ages to get used to going into a shop and the person serving me chatting away 19 to the dozen!. I moved back to the south 3 years ago and hated the rat race, so last year I moved back to dear old Lancashire - this is it now, I'm staying put.
What made you move from the south west lizzie? I did the same as you but in reverse in 1991. I moved from Hereford to Teignmouth. Hereford was getting bigger and the the traffic was a nightmare. Teignmouth is ok and the people friendly (probably because we have the most pubs for a town this size in Britain I think lol) Did you check out the village before you moved?
come back to the south west ,I love it here, are village is really friendly and there are folks here from all over
