When you were a youngster, did you dream, or plan, to be 'something ' when older ? you know , like fireman, engine/train driver, a pop star, actor, pilot,  model, just the perfect mum and wife maybe, so many dreams, perhaps so long ago, so many opportunities out there, and yet, what happened ? where did it all go wrong ? or did you succeed ? was your life/future planned and set out before you left school ? example.. living in the valleys of Wales you were destined to become a miner/a steelworker... if both your parents were doctors/ teachers, are you one now ? from road sweepers to rat catchers, to  the top person in your profession, ALL are needed, all in my eyes are equal too, i wanted to be a racing driver, but i HATE  speed ! could never be a police carrying one of those guns, couldnt be a prison officer , done a lot of so many different jobs and yet wasnt completely fulfilled in any of them. do you feel the same today in yours ? if you could change it right now, what would you do or become ? would you want to change ? you have to work to support the family, pay your bills, would your wife/ husband agree, support you in your aim to now fulfill that childhood 'dream ' ? was the late Princess Diana groomed to one day becoming a Queen ? was George w. Bush groomed to become the american president ?  what dreams, what chances, what slipped through your fingers, did you succeed ? is it ever to late to go back and start all over again ? who are you ? and what do you do ? or dream of becoming ?

When I was 8, the teacher went round the class asking everybody wanted to be "when you grow up".  Most of the boys wanted to be a footballer.  Most of the girls wanted to be a nurse or an airline stewardess.  I said that I wanted to be a milkman.  I remember that I wanted to be a milkman because I liked milk, but I gave up the idea when I discovered that they have to get up at 4am.

Wow! Long question!! I think aspirations have to change. I remember wanting to be something different every day as a kid like a model, pop star, vet, physio, hockey player but now I don't seem to want to further myself cause I'm quite happy just bein lil old me, stuck in a naf job but gettin by!!

I have always wanted to be a Meteorologist but could never afford to go to Uni so now I work for a massive high street music retailer and I earn a nice amount of money for doing something I love doing - listening to music.

Always wanted to be a dancer when I was younger and join Pan's People or Legs and Co.  You younger folk won't know who I am talking about.  At 57 I don't think I will fulfil that dream!!  Might now be accepted by The Roly Polys.

Oh FP - Pan's People - they were the days! I was always glued to the TV watchig them dance. When I was little, my brother used to play piano, whilst I sang into a large glass, convinced it used to sound louder! I would have loved to have been  a professional singer, but hit the other end of the scale & ended up becoming a Company Secretary instead. So maybe in the next life eh?

I always wanted to be a writer becuase I've been good at it for as long as I can remember - and now I am, at least part time. I always wanted to act - unrealsed beyond school plays, and I always wanted to work in a record shop, and when I retire from my day job, that's what I'm going to do.

I feel I had so many opportunities but wasted a crucial 5 or so years on drugs and other unsavory things and even though I'm only 21 I still feel as though all those career possibilities are gone. These days I aspire to become a LOW-level business woman, because although my career opportunities may have dwindled I have a new purpose as a wife and mother and now hope not to earn a zillion dollars and live in some big house, but earn enough to get by and save for our baby and still get to be home by 3 or 4 and have enough energy to enjoy eachother's company. I do think sometimes it can be too late, I almost cried to hear a man tell me in earnest that he wishes he could do it all again just because it was so wonderful. This means I should act like this is my only chance, because it is! If I could go back and change things I would take out all those stupid years of drug use. But then again, life may have taken me in a completely different direction and I may never have met my husband, or never matured emotionally and intellectually as much as I have. What a wonderful question, especially since I tend not to think about these things that often but when I do it pleasantly puts my life onto perspective. Thanks!

Yinzer - please don't put yourself down - we all make mistakes in life. You are only 21 years of age & are still young enough to follow your dreams. Look to the future - there's a big wide world out there waiting for you. Good luck.

   RE. Vinzer, no, THANK you for your so honest answer, one , apart from the many others, was the one i was looking for, we all in our life take so many different paths away from our dreams, hopes,and asperations, so many, like the one you took, can be the wrong one, if only we knew at the time ! we do learn from our mistakes. i thought AGE  would only do this, i dont know, but you are only 21 ? and learnt already, i applaud you, congratulate you,  NOW  is the time to turn back the clock ! see them dreams again ?  go, at 21, you have your whole life ahead, make them dreams come true ! you CAN do it, .... good luck always.

I always wanted to be an illustrator, and that's what I am today, though it took a long time to get where I am today. However, I have still not reached my goal. I want to work for myself, not a corporation, and be earning at least the same as now. I would like to be famous as an illustrator and a writer, so I struggle on.

Yinzer - well done for breaking your drug habit so soon. I wish I had my head screwed on at 21 the way you do. You have your whole life ahead of you, so go for it. 2nd row - at 46 I am still making mistakes, but I haven't given up. Never give up, 2nd row, where there's life there's hope, eh? There are all sorts of possibilities out there - the Open University, writing a book, joining a choir. There is no point in letting past failures get you down - it's NOW that counts.

I always wanted to be a pilot from my earliest thoughts on the matter, which were not long after the Battle of Britain with glamorous Spitfires flying overhead for real.  I never grew up and retired 18 years ago as an airline pilot.

When I was a kid, I wanted to be a scientist.  I didn't understand why anyone would want to be anything except a scientist (yes, I was a nerd then and I still am).  During my late teens and my early twenties, I got a little off the scientist track because I was too busy partying and experiencing life, but after many dead end jobs, I forced myself to go back to school.  Since then I've earned a bachelors degree, a masters and I am currently working on PhD and doing some very cool research.  So, I am a scientist and really like the track I'm on.  I must admit I'm a little older than many of my colleagues, but that's OK.  I don't regret any of the things that I've done and don't consider the time I spent partying a waste.  During that time, I learned a lot, mainly about who I was.  I believe it is never too late to change things to get the most out of life.

Yinzer, you are doing one of the most important jobs in the world at the moment in nurturing and bringing up your child!  However, at 21 you are still so very young and there's a world of opportunity out there. 

 

I am 57 and still have loads of ambition to try new things and educate myself.  I shall be retiring in a few years and am already making plans about taking a new direction in life.

I've wanted to be a writer since the age of 6 and I still do. I'm applying for a PhD next year in order to be able to work in a university and be able to write books or at least contribute to them. But I wanted to write novels when I was a kid and now it's probably more non-fiction. I do still harbour an ambition to write a novel but I'm not sure I have one in me.

  Ah ! yet another reply, like Vinzers, that i've been waiting for..... Ewood 27.. like you, i too remember the spitfires flying overhead, and the German ones too ! you and i could be around the same age, 18 years retired ? do airline pilots retire at an earlier age ?.. anyway, here we have a man who had that dream, that wish to ' fly ' ,to be up there in the clouds, and it all came TRUE !  marvellous , dont know yet, how many people ' jealous today ' !! not me, but you are the one now who can inform us HOW  to succeed , how did you remain on that one straight path, through all the mazes of life and pitfalls to achieve your boyhood dream ? i stand aside now Ewood 27, let others LEARN , so perhaps they can follow in your  footsteps.   and  Neutron, you too, congratulations, in seeing whatever light shone down, and realising it can be done. hard graft yes, but worth it all in the end... a lesson for each and everyone.... me included.

At the age of 18 I was given a conditional offer of a placement to the British Airways pilot traingin school as that was always what I wanted to be.

Didn't bloody want it enough though because I ballsed up my A levels and ended up becoming a chartered surveyor.  I wish I was a rock star (or at least able to sing in tune).  Take heed kiddo's!
