Serious question............is David Blunkett living on the same planet as the rest of us?  His views seem to be becoming more and more extreme. Does he really carry popular support?

i am not very keen on him either and i think its a great mistake to have a blind home office minister ..he cant see situations for himself he has to rely on what he is told...before anyone starts spouting equal opportunities at me..i am not against disabled people in the working place...i just think in this instance it was a mistake to give him the job...and no i dont think he is doing it very well either...he is trying to destroy the police federation and if only he could spend a week on the beat in a rough area see what the police have to face he may change his tune a bit,,,its okay him sat in a warm office living off us tax payers spouting his dribble,,,he should be removed from office...mullein

Mullein, regardless of whether someone can see or not, they have to rely on what they are told.  Gordon Brown does not nip down to the Bank of England to check the Government bank accounts (although perhaps he should!).  Blunkett may or may not be any good, but unless you are suggesting people are intentionally misleading him because he is blind, his lack of sight is irrelevant.

Personally, I am not convinced the direction he is heading is the best interests of the majority.

bangkok you have misread me...i said david blunkett has to rely in what he is told or what he reads he is unable to see the situation through his own eyes..i dont see where i said someone was misleading him...through his disability he is not capable of going round the uk.visiting crime areas and actually viewing it for himself as he cant actually witness it then he has to rely on others for information..you would not purchase a new car because i told you it was wonderfull...you would want to see it for yourself..his disability is a grave error in the post he is in.if he was doing gordon browns job then yes he probably could cope better as that is basically paperwork...in the home office position we are dealing with real life incidents not figures on paper and he should be able to witness what is going on...mullein

I used to think he was an OK guy.  He seems to have gone power crazy over recent years and, as you say, has become extreme.  I think he has become dangerous.

What i think is worrying is his approach to this paternity case with his mistress. Having a mistress in politic is a sackable offence anyway and he'd better hope those kids are his or he's going to a) look very silly, b) have caused major heartache for that family and c) caused his own sacking. It worries me the amount of politicians having affairs, if they can't remain faithful to their wives, how are they going to remain faithful to the british public? And if they find it so easy to lie are they lting about every thing? If these politicians put as much effort into their policies or working out things like the nhs, as they did into their sex lives, we'd probably have a much better country.

Sadly, yes

Sadly, quite a lot, yes.  It is partly because of his reactionary views (and not necessarily in spite of them) that the Labour government is [I predict] going to be re-elected with an increased majority.

P.S. The tragedy about this issue is that we can't rely on, or expect, an alternative Conservative government to be any more liberal or reasonable about the issues of crime, terrorism, civil liberties, habeas corpus, curfews, detention, etc.  The solution therefore lies with other alternative parties.
