Tricky one. The early saxon monarchs were tribal leaders, such as offa who ruled mercia, which was basically the black country. Slowly the areas ruled grew larger. The Saxon monarchy was elected rather than strictly hereditary. It only became so when William invaded, and even then primogeniture was not enforced until after King John's time.
I believe it was when William the Conquerer 'won' the Battle of Hastings and declared himself King.
not really. edward and harold were both Kings of all England....
