Reg plates

I sometimes see car registartion numbers that begin FIL followed by a 4 or 5 digit number. Where are these plates from?

Is it a Northern Ireland plate?

I think they are of the format " LLL 8888 " , (where 'L' is a letter and  '8' a number.)

Though most pre-fixes I've seen seem to have a 'Z' in them. (One local bus company runs a load of ex-Belfast buses which have this form of registration)

Yes, that registration plate is from Northern Ireland.  More specifically, all registrations ending in 'IL' are from County Fermanagh, and will have been registered in the town of Enniskillen.

Brachiopod - I don't know where you are, but I have a feeling that the 'ex-Belfast' buses you have running locally may have bodywork by Wright of Ballymena, who often register vehicles locally (JDZ ****/NDZ **** amongst others). Just a hunch!

I'm actually in East London, lodekka, but those prefixes ring a bell - I'll double check next time I see one. And I'll look out for the coach-builders marque too.
