Boredom? The hope of having a relationship with someone they have a chance of understanding? A quiet life?
I would think it's less a case of 'developing' tendencies, than giving expression to an aspect of sexuality that has been repressed in order to comply with social norms. This need for expression can be the result of the pressure of comforming to a heterosexual stereotype, and the experience and confidence in the older individual to break out of the confines of an identity that they sealed themselves into for reasons that no longer apply - peer group or parental pressure, social stigma and so on. I'm a heterosexual male in midlife, and see no inclination to explore homosexuality - at least not yet!

There are very few dormant homosexual men, less than 3% (see Kinsey report).
