What are the disadvantages of using seawalls to protect an area? And what are the advantages (apart from protecting the area) ?

Disadvantages that immediately spring to mind are the cost, the aesthetic impact on the environment, impact on any existing eco-system in the area & the potential for simply moving the problem further along the coast.

Can't think of any advantages other than protecting the area but this usually outweighs the disadvantages.

I would simply say that in the main, the downsides are the cost and the blot on the landscape.

On the up side, there wouldn't be any landscape without them, and they are often designed and installed to create a nice promenade or path by the sea.
