It's a Crown Dependency the same as Jersey and Guernsey. I don't think it's ever been a protectorate, at lesst not of the British Crown.
There are also the the Overseas territories : Anguilla, Bermuda, British Antarctic Territory, British Indian Ocean Territory, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Gibraltar, Montserrat, Pitcairn Islands, Saint Helena (Ascension & Tristan da Cunha), South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands. As well as the Soveriegn Base Area on Cyprus which is also a territory but functions a little differently to the others.
