Door to door canvassing for votes

About an hour ago a lady knocked on the door to ask if we would be voting for the Labour Party. I said 'no' but also said 'to be honest I won't be voting for any of them' (all liars and cheats in my eyes) I just wondered if anyone actually says at the door who they will vote for. At the end of the day,the polling stations are all very secretive.You don't walk in and announce who you will be voting for do you?! My mum would probably have said 'it's none of your business' She has always been very secretive about who she votes for. I don't think my dad even knew. It just made me think.

The public are surprisingly honest and open about saying who they are going to vote for.

That's why Mori polls tend to correctly predict the outcome ...

... even when it's something unusual like a hung Parliament with the Conservatives holding the largest share.

They were spot on, because people do actually say who they are going to vote for.

We always tell whoever it is that we shall vote for them. Then we make up our minds and vote. Never miss voting cos its the way to preserve our precious democracy, whatever you may feel about the quality of the candidates.

it is fun tking them on - I remember having that George Young on my doorstep and telling him that the Cons would not get my vote until they were more accepting of Europe - or showed me the maths of joining NAFTA with US/Canada/Mexico as the UK could no way go it alone.

my vote goes to the party who takes their infernal posters down the quickest after the election.

If it is anonymous, then why are polling cards and so on numbered ?

It's none of their beeswax who I will or won't be voting for quite frankly. I tend to be pleasant to all of them, I'm a wimp....

But Barb, if you don't vote it is partly your fault that 'all liars and cheats' stay in power. If you feel like that just vote for the best of a bad lot.

I'm with Cazzz on this one, there is nothing better than a good political debate on your door step. Its great when you get them squirming trying to answer questions without falling off the party line.

barb1314, You should vote, its a privilege that shouldn't be abused.

Its mandatory in Australia, the reason for that, is because when it was voluntary as in this country, the turnouts became so low, it was the only way to get people to vote.

It'll happen in this country too, if to many people think like you, and don't vote.

Please, please use your vote.

You should always use your vote. If you really can't support anyone then go along and spoil your paper. Just put a big cross through the whole thing or write all over it or anything. Then put it in the box. They have to count ALL papers and announce them. If everyone who felt like you do went to the polls and did this they would have to announce 10 million spoilt papers (for example) which tells them that we ARE interested - just don't feel represented.
At the moment the political parties like to pretend we aren't interested enough to go out and vote. Let's show them we are!!

Sorry for the delay in answering and thanks for all the replies. I have always voted since I was able to (both local and general elections) but am a little disillusioned at the moment. I will vote but she probably got me at the wrong moment,poor lady (I feel quite bad actually as I was a bit rude...I was just starting an Easter Egg!) Have just had our local Independent man round and I did stop to listen.Interesting to hear that generally people are quite honest (or say yes to all and then decide!) Thanks again.Not one person called round here at the General Election..I was quite shocked really.

Where we live,there is no knocking on the door.
Three prospective candidates so far, have posted their manifesto through the letterbox.
It must be the fastest re-cycling ever,in front door,out back, into correct bin.

Our candidates are saving their shoe leather and posting their mandates and AV leaflets to us.
