I think there are plenty of alternative terms that avoid gender issues without sounding ridiculously contrived.
eg. "how would you term manhole cover" ? How about 'inspection hatch'?
"Fireman"(potentially "fire-woman"/"fire-person") has already been altered without recourse to silly 'PC' terms, we now refer to them as "firefighters".
