The 6000 year reference in the bible?
33 Answers
Apparently the bible ages the earth at 6000 years old, I'm going by picking up information on it from different sources. I'm not saying that this is right or wrong but what I am wondering is, did something take place 6000 years ago that could be looked at as a new beginning in human history and perhaps this 6000 year thing is a sort of reference to this rather than to be taken as fact? Does anyone have a thought on this?

Yes, I think it's perfectly reasonable to assume that there are a few planets which have developed life sustaining qualities, especially when they have been given four or five thousand million years to do so. Lets not forget, earth has been given four thousand million years to do what it's done and we reckon we can work it all out in two hundred or so years. Aren't we just great.
Since that woeful rebellion in Eden, some 6,000 years have elapsed. Is that too long? God could have destroyed Satan and his supporters centuries ago. But is has been better to wait until every conceivable doubt about the rightness of God sovereignty and the integrity of humans to him is dispelled. Is it not true a court case to prove who is right and who is wrong may take years
Yes,in view of the importance of the issues facing God and mankind—universal sovereignty and the integrity of humans how wise it was of God to allow for time to pass! Now we see clearly what happens when humans ignore God’s laws and take charge of their own affairs. The result is widespread evil. And that is why so many innocent people suffer today.

Well, Elderman, the Garden of Eden story is, at best, an allegory, but - even if we take it at face value - isn't God supposed to be all-knowing? If so, there can't have been a "woeful rebellion", can there? Surely he/she must have known that Adam and Eve were going to disobey, so the forbidden fruit nonsense must all have been a set-up, mustn't it? I'll leave it at that, as debating with people like you is an utter waste of time.
(I use an upper-case 'G' for God purely as a literary convention and to distinguish YOUR version from Ra, Thor, Shiva and and the multitude of other dreamt-up "deities".)

Our Religious Education teacher, in secondary school told us that Adam and Eve story was not real, more of a story to get a point across. I pretty much thought nothing of it at the time because I felt like that anyway. However, when I told people what she had said in later conversations a lot of the people were shocked that she would say such a thing in RE class.
Anyway, I don't think there are too many people who take the 6000 year age as fact any more. Then again, therein lies one of my main problems with religion, as soon as something from the bible is completely disproven, it's brushed off as a metaphor or whatever and we move on. But it was fact 200 or 300 years ago.

I see nothing in this thread that "disproves" the existence of Eden. Perhaps you could cite such a source, unless you believe that popular and/or majority thought is such proof.
I doing so, though, one must completely discard any reference to the Earth being 6,000 years old though, since, as mentioned, Scripture does not contain such a reference, in fact or implied.
