opinions of other peoples clothes, tastes, homes etc

lots of people have quite strong opinions on others clothes and tastes and homes etc

some have some very strong 'dos and donts'

...not sure where they get them from and why they feel their opinion is any more correct than the person with the "offending article"...

however...

would anyone actually like everyone else to dress the same as them? really? all wearing almost identical outfits and hairdos, and have identical homes and cars...?
really?

im many films, the future is depicted with everyone wearing uniforms or very similar clothes...usually sort of smock/tunics and wishy washy colours... there is very little expression and personality shown...
and their homes and vehicles are usually very simplistic and bland

is this how you would like the world to be??

In my opinion, individuality is a good thing The world would be incredibly boring if we all thought the same and had the same tastes, even if we disagree with what others think or find tasteful.

Unwittingly we do all dress the same. You don`t see a man walking down the street wearing a skirt. You don`t see women in the local shopping centre who are naked from the waist up. We all conform one way or another. It wasn`t so long ago that people did dress uniformly in places like China.

some african tribes women are naked from the waist up

but i get your point...in britain at least there is kind of a standard 'base' uniform, and the variations are variations on those base things....

I actually love looking at how other people dress. I have rather a dull 'play it safe' sense of style so I love seeing what other people can knock together - and decide if I think they suceeded or failed. Not that I would actually tell them my opinion.

237SJ - you are, of course, correct in that in whatever society we live, we do conform to a great extent. There are places in the world where near nakedness is acceptable, which in our society that is not generally the case. But within the bounds of what is acceptable, individuality is a good thing. I have lived for the past few year in East Germany, where my English modesty is considered amusing. My first visit to a swimming bath was a revelation. Mixed changing rooms, and although a few cubicles were available (and I scuttled straight into one), most people strutted around starkers without being in the slightest bit bothered about it. I would still defend the right to individuality within ones own comfort zone.

This is a false dichotomy.

Just because people may have ideas of taste or style that they might think should be imposed does not imply that they think everybody should be the same.

Someone might think that people shouldn't wear red and orange together or (to steal a previous example) that nobody should wear a mankini but that doesn't mean that they think everyone should wear the same chairman Mao outfit

Someone seriously posted on here recently that ( horror of horrors!!!!!!!) someone on their housing estate which ONLY had white painted doors, garages etc, had painted theirs red.lol - and thought it nearly a hanging offence. Some people really do think their ideas on ' style and taste' ought to be imposed on others and their freedom of self expression through appearance curtailed.

I think some people have an intolerance to anything visually different outside of their 'norm'. I love to see an individual style .I discovered a retro rockabilly clothes shop & was fascinated to see the womens and mens clothes in the window. A girl came out dressed in the style & she looked fantastic .. I thought .. you've got it & you look good in it!!

It would be very boring if we all dressed the same, since we are all different shapes and sizes, and what suits one doesn't suit another.... however, I was thinking the other day how the "rules" have changed over the years. My mother always abided by the maxim that the further away your clothes were from your skin, the longer they should be - so you never wore a jacket which showed the jumper or blouse hem underneath, and a coat had to be longer than the skirt or dress under it. These days, some young girls' jackets are more like boleros, it's all layers - I like it, but it's not like Mother's time!
