Why do people prefer to believe lies about God?
115 Answers
In the short time I have been on this site, I have found that many people believe the lies that are told about God. These lies are usually perpetrated by the very ones who are supposed to teach us.
The most common lies are:
God is a mystery
Does not care about us
Is vengeful
Is unfair
He accepts all worship.
Of course there are many more which will no doubt raise their ugly heads during the course of this discussion.

Apparently I missed you out when I made my responses and many here think it was deliberate and that I could not find a response to you. That is not the case, I genuinely overlooked you and for that I apologise. So here is my view on the points you raised.
//Religion has relied on brutal supression of all criticism for millennia and it is over//
Certainly religion is to blame for a lot of the horrific crimes perpetrated over the centuries. But that is religion – not God. Religion claims to follow God but the god it follows is not the Almighty God. There is a God that people do not realise they are worshipping. Jesus Christ called him the “ruler of the world”. The apostle Paul called him the “god of this system of things who has blinded the minds of the unbelievers”. Who is this one? You may scoff and laugh hysterically when I tell you – so hold your sides and here goes - Satan the Devil. … There you are,,,, I told you you would laugh. But regardless it is true. The Bible identifies him as the one who told the first lie and has lied, & lied every since. So much so that the majority of people defy his existence.
I see you acknowledge that there is a coming Armageddon. But it won’t be what you expect. But I don’t want to spoil your fun – when it comes you will know it. Let’s hope when that happens you may be one of the “number no man can count”.
//The Christians have the return of Jesus and a world where "The Lord" rules everyone.//
Has no one told you that Jesus Christ has already returned and that he isn’t ruling everyone!
I don’t belong to organised religion. I have had my fair share of it. I questioned what the religions taught and it wasn’t what my Bible said. The lies spouted by religious leaders have maligned Almighty God and his Son. And people continue to want to hear them. They prefer the teachings of the religions rather than looking for themselves and searching out the truth.
I could go on and on but the fact is many here are derogatory of what I say. I am not forcing my beliefs on anyone. No one can convert another. You only have to look at the missionaries in the African countries hundreds of years ago – yes they accepted Christianity but then they go back into their little houses and continue practising their age old traditions and magic spells etc. Constantine accepted Christianity but only inasmuch as it was to further his cause, he was not genuine. So no man can be converted unless he himself wants to.
So to you and all you sceptics out there = we are all accountable whether we want to admit it or not there is no getting out of it.

To believe has been defined as “to accept as true, genuine, or real.” The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights enshrines every person’s “right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion.” This right includes the freedom “to change his religion or belief” if he wants to do so.
When it comes to religion, mistaken beliefs have historically caused great harm. Think of the horrors that resulted when religious leaders “inspired Christian zealots to pitiless violence” during the so-called Holy Crusades of the Middle Ages.
Many teachers and authorities in specialized fields of knowledge deserve great respect. Yet, history is littered with examples of renowned teachers who were absolutely wrong.
Even the media has greatly influenced people’s beliefs. Most people are glad that there is freedom of speech in the media, giving them access to information that can be useful. However, there are powerful forces that can and frequently do manipulate the media. What is often presented is biased information that can insidiously affect your thinking.
It is true that religious leaders who claim to follow the Bible have produced many confusing and conflicting ideas. This is because they have not, in fact, based their beliefs on the Bible.
But, of course, it is your decision as to what you want to believe.

The Bible clearly describes the horrific massacres of the people who already lived in the lands invaded by the Hewbrews. These massacres are upheld in the Bible itself as evidence of the glory of God.
The crimes are not an abberation by people misusing the Bible but a foundational part of its message of bigoty and prejudice.

Truthabonds, //I questioned what the religions taught and it wasn’t what my Bible said. //
Have you checked out Leviticus?
//Certainly religion is to blame for a lot of the horrific crimes perpetrated over the centuries. But that is religion – not God.//
//Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.//
^^ God did that.
It seems to me the only people telling lies about God are the ones who believe he is what he isn't.

Clanad. Yes, I know. My reference to Leviticus was in response to Truthabounds first statement. //I questioned what the religions taught and it wasn’t what my Bible said. //
My Amalek reference was in response to his second. //Certainly religion is to blame for a lot of the horrific crimes perpetrated over the centuries. But that is religion – not God.//
Sorry, perhaps I didn't make that plain enough.

Truthabounds seems to have lost interest in this thread. Surprisingly, for someone prone to such wordy postings they are entirely silent.
Clearly the answers elucidated here are not the ones they wanted to hear. The truth is that it is people like Truthabounds prefer lies about God.
It is a monster they worship.

You wish!! I have many other interests in my life and unlike many here, I don’t spend hours and hours nit picking and knocking other peoples beliefs and ideas. If you don’t want to believe in God – so be it. Who am I to try and change your mind? Wouldn’t dream of it.
My question was just that – a question to start a discussion. A discussion in which I have participated, but over the past few days I have other things to occupy my mind and time.
I believe in God absolutely and irrevocably.
Naomi: What the religions teach is not what the Bible teaches. Have you not yet discovered that for yourself? Oh dear! You are slipping.
As to 1 Samuel 15 v 1 – 3:
Because of their hardened and unreasonable hostility toward God’s people and because they “did not fear God,” the Amalekites came under a permanent ban. Since they worked in opposition to the purposes of the Universal Sovereign, he decreed their utter extermination in time.
Just a little history lesson here for you.
Who were the Amalekites and why did God exterminate them? Well The Amalekites were “the first one of the nations” to launch an unprovoked attack on the Israelites after the Exodus, at Rephidim near Mount Sinai. As a consequence, God decreed ultimate extinction for the Amalekites. (Ex 17:8-16;) A year later, when the Israelites attempted to enter the Promised Land contrary to Almighty God’s word, they were repulsed by the Amalekites. Twice during the days of the Judges these adversaries of Israel shared in assaulting Israel. They did it in the days of Eglon king of Moab. Again, with the Midianites and Easterners, they pillaged the land of Israel seven years before Gideon and his 300 men defeated them.
Because of this persistent hatred, during the period of the kings God ‘called to account’ the Amalekites, commanding King Saul to strike them down, which he did “from Havilah as far as Shur, which is in front of Egypt.” However, Saul, overstepping God’s order, spared Agag their king. But God was not mocked, for “Samuel went hacking Agag to pieces before Jehovah in Gilgal.” (1Sa 15:2-33) Some of David’s raids included Amalekite villages, and when they in return attacked Ziklag and carried off David’s wives and goods, he and 400 men overtook them, recovering all that had been stolen. (1Sa 27:8; 30:1-20) During the reign of Hezekiah, some of the tribe of Simeon annihilated the remnant of the Amalekites.
The Apostle Paul wrote that “All the things that were written aforetime for our instruction that through our endurance and through the comfort from the scriptures we might have hope” yes, when we read the Hebrew scriptures ( or OT) there is a lesson. That lesson is that the time is fast approaching when all those who are against God and his people will soon have to take account for their actions. Which side are you going to be on?

@Truthabounds - What Truths, what history, what objective evidence do you have for some of the overblown claims you make in your last post? What independant evidence do you have to support your "lessons"?
OT, NT, Bible, whatever. To begin to assert that they are the inerrant word of god is fatous and completely ignores the editing, politics, rewriting, chinese whispers and error that are present. It is a book of myth and fable, no more, no less.
