immigration, lack or strength in leaders or we british are just plain weak?

Im perplexed and its getting to a stage where I dont understand. I went to my wifes friends place who happens to be from iraq. The windows were wide open and the heating was on full blast apparently to help ventilation. The guy was there with a few of his friends who could speak to me but chose not too. His british born wife explained that he and his friends choose not to speak English as they are too proud of their home land to change. I then found out that all these guys were on benefits and I asked them how they distinguished between asking for help from a country and preserving their 'proudness'. Once this was explained by his otherhalf me and my wife were told we should leave. My wife is annoyed with me and I am left with a feeling of guttedness. I know there are loads of uk born british people exactly the same. I think I am just venting my anger. but I came away the bad person and I have never been out of work in my life and every country I visit I respect the culture and try blend in. Am I bad thinking ill of these people?

and therein lies the problem. This is not unique to just Iraqis. Until there is some requirement in place for immigrants to respect the new homeland of their choosing, the UK will be a place where even children who are born here won't be able to speak English.

They chose not to speak to you, which seems odd, and then you challenged them in turn by asking a question which, while perfectly valid in a debate on Question Time or down the pub, might seem a trifle insensitive when you are a guest in someone's house.
