A hypothetical question. Bearing in mind all the opposition to our recent and current military involvement around the world, if another Hitler were to surface, should we wage war on him as we did in 1939 – or should we mind our own business and keep out?

In Europe then kick his a$$ all the way as it is a direct threat, outside of Europe then let others deal with it.
This would be "our own business" as it would affect Europe and with that us! So yes, I think we should. I cannot see this ever happening again though, especially not in Germany! Having lived in Germany for 28 years and still having many contacts there, I know for certain that this would not be something the German people would ever again allow to happen!
we'd give him a council house and benefits probably!
What type of Hitler are we talking here ?
Does he need to be a German ?
The German people would never allow something like him to happen again .

I'm thinking mindset rather than nationality.
Ok serious answer to joke? question.

Germany has always felt it's destined to unite Europe

vide Hitler and the Teutonic knights...

It absorbed East Germany as an act of faith, and is poised to dominate Europe without firing a shot

Deutsche and uber alles ???????????????????????
But the threat isn't from within Europe today. There are many countries around the world where someone with such ideas can just move into the top position of power. Communism killed 100 million people after World War 2 yet no one attacked Russia or China. Indeed, when Hitler attacked Russia to stamp out Communism the West sided with Stalin! - who murdered 30 million people! In 2002 Robert Mugabe blatently launched racist attacks on all the white farmers in Zimbabwe and kicked them off their farms. Zimbabwe is now broke as a result and 8 million are starving yet no one moved against Mugabe.

The other factor entering the equation today is religion. Political ideology is one thing, but religious zeal is quite another and it's far more dangerous. The world is a far more dangerous place today than it has been since the end of the 15th century where the current religious conflicts left off. This so-called 'Arab Spring' is another factor and I can't see the new Islamist governments tolerating Israel for long like the former leaders. Then there's Iran, Pakistan, China etc, etc. The dangers are all around the world today. All it takes is someone moving into the top position of power, pushing others around and the world doing nothing.

My own views are that we mind our own business and keep out. Interferring in other people's problems has always caused us problems and it's never been successful. It hasn't worked for anyone as the US are finding today. They removed Mullah Omar, Saddam and Gaddafi - but out of the frying pan.....etc.
The court of human rights would protect him due to the fact he had joined a gym and owned a cat, which made any antisocial behaviour totally acceptable.
You're right Venator.

Germany has this same old idea that they are destined to dominate Europe. They twice failed to dominate Europe militarily - now they are trying economically. How dare they dictate to Greece, Spain etc how they should run their countries! If they don't like funding other nations - then p--- off! At least the whole EU disaster is unravelling. I can't wait to see it wrap itself around Germany's neck!
Yes Andyvon - to misquote some American singer - "one man kills you with a six gun, one with a fountain pen"

" ever closer union" - duh?
The BIG UNSPOKEN QUESTION ..... can Germany support all the funding of the EU currencies?
Well.....no! Why should they?

I see Angela Mewrkel as exhibiting the same blind arrogance as Adolf Hitler when he tried to dominate Europe. Hitler's dictum was fight to the last shell and never take a step back. Hitler never recognised defeat and he never understood the concept of a fighting and ordered retreat to a stronger position of defence. He destroyed Germany as a result.

Angela Merkel is doing exactly the same. She has the same arrogance that will not accept the EU experiment and the euro have failed. She seems to be throwing reserves away into a bottomless pit and failing to understand about an ordered retreat to a position of strength. Angela Merkel is in the process of destroying Germany as surely as Adolf Hilter did.

Venator, no, it isn’t a joke question. Currently there is a lot of anti-war feeling, with people calling for our troops to be brought home and saying we should keep out of the problems of other countries, so I wondered what it would take for those people to change their minds and support war. It’s just something I’ve mused over - and I thought the question might make for an interesting discussion. I wasn’t thinking of Germany though – this hypothetical Hitler could surface anywhere – so Germany, past or present, isn’t the issue. It’s more a question of where we, as a nation, feel our moral obligation should begin and end.
World will not be able to do anything because next Hitler will be either from big Israel (aka USA) or small USA (aka Israel) and both of these countries rule (or control) UNO ( a dummy created by big countries to give them power over small countries). And then a new Hitler may not be an individual but a system or strategy or a mindset (like USA WILL attack if they suspect that they MIGHT be attacked).
Many people in high places knew what Hitler was about long before 1939, one was Churchill. If our current politicians, hierarchy knew that another similar person was in the wings, i suggest they should take them out. That of course wouldn't happen. Besides can you see another Hitler someplace, not in Germany, nor even in the Middle East?
I have often wondered the same thing myself. One thing though, the world's weapons have improved, not right word, but has changed, so it wouldn't likely be a land war, too expensive, perhaps a nuclear weapon dropped into a heavily populated area, or even chemical warfare, which could decimate millions.
Did you hear Rabbi Lionel Blue on Radio 4 this morning?

He was saying that Europe today reminded him very much of the Weimar Republic - Currency failing, rise of right wing extremists etc.

As I see it, Germany is the only strong nation, France is backing off, UK doesn't want to know. Perhaps Germany will lead a federal Europe without having to fight a war this time...

Deutschland uber alles hidden behind Ode to joy!
Back to the OP - From our experience of our recent wars, we have accepted America's line that there was an evil enemy - Saddam Hussein, Gaddafi, Bin Laden.

So presumably, we're just waiting for America to nominate the next "Hitler" figure...
well we haven't seen a Hitler type, you cannot equate those mentioned, Bin Laden, who could command the respect and following of many, but they were in disparate groups, more guerilla warfare, than all out war that Hitler led. You only have to look at footage of him on podiums, ranting to the faithful, which were hundreds of thousands, and in some cases millions in one go. Stalin was the nearest in effect to Hitler, and we don't have anyone like that either.
Short answer: no, we would not go to war with him to save another country (Poland last time) from his clutches; yes, we would certainly confront him if he threatened to invade the UK.
