Why Do People Buy So Much Food At Christmas?

I have seen them in the supermarket sometimes with two trollies absolutely piled high with food and drink, why? Half of it will be thrown away, it's ridiculous, especially when the shops will actually only be closed for two days, you would think they were stocking up for the winter. Why not just buy the normal amount of food you can actually eat without going overboard and wasting any? People are so stupid, they are like sheep.

Well, a lot of people have family round so they need more food, nothin goes to waste in my house.

Same happens when there's some snow forecast. People panic buy.

Tis the season to make lolly .People tend to eat less in the summer so its a chance for the shops to make money at Christmas time which would be a great part of their annual income .If people spend lots they save more .spend 70 quid and you could save up to £1.25p with the "bargains on offer .

How do you know half of it is thrown away?

Maybe people are expecting loads of extra guests for christmas? I know that normally I end up cooking for 15 when normally there is only 2 of us - however not this year so I have only done my normal shop.

We arent buying hardly any extra food, maybe a nice bottle of scotch for the Irish Coffee, thats all the booze, maybe a nice joint of beef. Next year I hope tp be breeding and selling my own turkeys at Xmas

Awww Dave50....calm down and be happy. I normally shop little and often locally. My household doubles for a week over Christmas. I'll shop once for that week and to cater for family and friends who drop in. A sherry or coffee may turn into...stay for dinner/tea. Don't want to be nipping to the co-op for another slice of ham or mince pie. Then there are the goodies to nibble on while beating the grandchildren at Triv.

You can not tell how many they have to provide for. That said sure we do tend to over-purchase. It's the one time of year we choose to eat & drink & be merry to excess, and no one wants to find they have too little and have run out; the preference is to accept the risk of a little waste and be sure of a good time.

maybe Dave some people actually have friends they invite around for parties -children normally at Uni or working away come home for Xmas - I will be cooking for around 12 over the Xmas period instead of 3 -maybe I should just give them all bread and jam or buy a 4lb chicken like I normally do and we can share the veg? And maybe the shops are open two days after Xmas -but maybe I want to stay at home and rest -not do blinking food shopping!

Don't forget many families have a trolley full of stuff as a normal weekly shop, so a lot of what people see as overbuying is actually their normal buy plus a bit extra for the Christmas visitors.

yes I have bought extra. It goes in the freezer mainly and is so I have choice over christmas and new year but what isn't eaten then will be eaten over the first few months of 2013.

The main supermarkets here (Tesco and Asda) are only closed for Christmas day. Who the hell goes shopping on Boxing day?!
