Pretend Irish People Celebrating St Patrick's Day On Sunday
63 Answers
So I wonder how many English people will be out celebrating, wearing green and those stupid Guinness hats and because they think it's so 'cool' to be Irish they will be trying to convince everyone who will listen that they are actually Irish just because their great great great grandmother visited Dublin once for 5 minutes.
I just hope these same people will put as much effort into celebrating St George's day when the time comes but I won't hold my breath as they won't even know what date it is.

I don't celebrate St Pats - unless I am on holiday in Tenerife, where we have several irish friends and the whole place turns green for a couple of weeks. I have a pair of green flashing glasses and a big foam Guinness hat, but I won't be wearing it on Sunday! On 23rd April, I shall fly my flag from the window with pride.
I grew up in Bedford, which is chock full of Irish people. They did not mind if English people celebrated alongside them, they welcomed it. One old man in the Fleur-de-Lis, an Irish pub was so insistent that I was from Irish stock, (the last Irish person in our family was from Sligo and moved to England in 1770), I used to wear a green silk skirt that I still own, just to appease him.
I celebrate St Georges Day even though it is the day after my Dad's birthday. We don't all get hopelessly drunk on saints days!

Well me mother is Irish!
A whiile ago Birmingham had a black lady mayoress. to save disrupting the traffic, the St Patrick's Day parade was held on the Friday, the fifteenth, lady mayoress leading with a steel band, a load of kids with their faces painted and one bewildered bloke in a green Ireland rugby shirt at the back, who defected from the route to go into the Dubliner pub in Digbeth ! So somebody of the wrong nationality, on the wrong day leading a band that had nothing what so ever to with Ireland leading a bunch of butterfly bedecked kids marched around town with a mis-spelt banner stating HAPPY ST PATIRCK'S DAY (sic). Could only happen in Birmingham!

It's just another reason for people to go out and have fun. It's not something I really bother (and as my maternal family are all irish i could loosely claim to be part irish) with but I don't see why it should be a problem. The Irish know how to have a decent night out, the rest of us want to join in. Is that a bad thing?
