Back in the 1980's Margaret Thatcher imposed a media ban on the IRA and cut off their propaganda and publicity in the media.
Surely it must be possible to do the same with those that incite hatred, preach terrorism etc?
Seeing that odious man Anjem Choudary on Newsnight turned my stomach and made me think of this possible solution.

It was a bit daft giving Gerry Adams a voice over.
I agree Mrs. Overall, why they let that Choudary scum on tv is beyond me, they seek publicity and the media give it to them.
Not a bad idea in principle, but those same people would be able to pass on their hate elsewhere these days. Too easy to spread this stuff in the internet.

Better, perhaps, to bring them into the public and expose their false philosophy, though even that might not work.

Who decides what is worthy of being given airtime?

The recently retired Pope claimed that condoms promoted HIV. Other western religious leaders have vilified homosexuals. These things cause great harm.

Do we silence them as well?
Indeed Jim, no internet in Thatcher's day. It is a different world we live in now both from a technological and terrorist point of view.
I'm afraid the whole thing became a joke, and was mocked mercilessly by satirists and comedians.
Isn't that what they did years ago towards football hooligans? The fact they weren't getting their media publicity it quitened down or did it? Is is just that it isn't broadcast as much? I'm not in the UK so don't watch UK TV hence the question.
Beso, //Do we silence them as well?//

No, we have to respect them. ;o)

I'm in two minds about this. On the one hand, why give him the publicity, but on the other why not allow him to show himself for what he really is? I do think the media should ignore the poppy burners, so perhaps it should ignore people like him too. At least that way it would be difficult for him to have any impact at all on the population at large to whom he would just become a complete non-entity.
the media seem to seek him out at every turn, his face has appeared in many news programmes, in the papers, pictures of him at every rally promoting his brand of Islam, why not give more air time, space to those who oppose people like him. This man is a cancer in our society, his skewed ideology, views on gays, women's rights are well known. The fact he said he wants Sharia Law across Britain, that Buckingham palace will one day have a flag of Islam flying over it, does it actually have a flag, it should be funny, beyond parody, but remember the killers of Lee Rigby listened to this man's words, and more like him, we take him for a fool at our peril.
cut off his benefits, every single penny, see how he can survive then, sponge off someone else for a change.
The BBC got round Thatcher's ban on Irish Republican spokespersons on television by having actors voicing their words. If that ban was reintroduced with the added proviso that the government could select the voice to be used, it might prove effective.
Elmer Fudd and Porky Pig both had distinctive voices.
On second thoughts Porky Pig might be seen as needlessly provocative. Bugs Bunny, maybe?
//cut off his benefits//

Someone else on here suggested that instead of giving him benefits, he be given a job cleaning Tesco's toilets. Good idea!

i can't understand why this man who is able bodied, hasn't been chased by the DWP as many people have been, for not looking for work, or does he consider being a hate preacher work. He gets over 25k a year in benefits, that is if you believe the papers, if so why, when others are struggling on much less than that who work for a living.
// I'm in two minds about this. On the one hand, why give him the publicity, but on the other why not allow him to show himself for what he really is //

That's sort of what I think Naomi. I saw him on Channel 4 news and thought what an odious little turd he was. I reckon most people must think the same when they see him, so the best thing is probably just to give him all the airtime he wants.
he has been doing the same stuff for years, so it obviously hasn't worked, he still preaches, the more they have him on tv, in the papers, the more publicity he gets.

A plastic bag over the head & tied round the neck usually does the trick.
