Interesting story that has been rumbling on for a while over in the US.

A male dentist fired a female dental assistant, who, in the words of both himself and, apparently his wife, was a long-term and stellar employee.

The reason for the sacking? The dentist found her too attractive and considered her a threat to his marriage.

The dental assistant brought a case against the Dentist for wrongful dismissing on the grounds of sexual discrimination. I fully expected to hear she had won her case, and thought no more about it.

Surprise surprise! She has lost her case - not only that, but an all-male court rejected her appeal too. Quite shocked by this... what do you guys think?

And a link to a DM article about the original story

Interesting that the dentists family pastor was consulted before this action was taken......

Why do people make simple things so complicated. Dentist finds assistant attractive......he makes a pass. She responds and they have an affair............passionate and exciting. She doesn't respond.....no affair and no threat to his marriage. I really cannot see what part the Law has to play or the need for her to be sacked.

because of course, its always the fault of the woman isn't it?
I do not think I have ever before read a Daily Mail article and found myself incensed in the way the journalists actually intended. What an odious man.

an interesting court case

assume they all told 'the tooth, the whole tooth and nothing but the tooth'
Of course she lost, but not on the grounds that you thought she might have lost on.

Employers, especially private employers, in the United States have a wide latitude in hireling and firing employees and this is pretty much held state by state.

Firing for cause, even stupid causes, less some protection, (sexual discrimination would have passed muster in hiring ) is rather common in the US and upheld often enough to be precedent.
Might be for unprofessional conduct.
She's not all that.
I do think that under the law as it stands the judgment was correct
I do think that under the law as it stands the judgment was correct, as you are suggesting, neodarwinian. I just think that the law as it stands is utterly stupid.

On this, I find myself in agreement with Sqad - not something that happens all that often outside of the body and soul section :)

I understand neodarwins point- its legality - but like Jim, I think it a silly law.
i suppose his new assistant will be selected by his wife from all the male applicants
Don't you just hate it when the wrong name pops out whilst in the throws of passion? :o/
He seems to be a vain obsessive prat who didn't like being turned down.
.
