I recall when maddie McCann first disappeared there were family members present who gave news conferences for the family, I think one was Gerry mccanns brother, I don't recall seeing them in the media since they left Portugal, or have I missed them ?

Why would they be?

The were probably too distressed to do all the news conferences themselves.
