Supply & demand; same reason other services are bought & sold.

Probably because it's supposed to be the oldest profession in the world ,like physicians, prostitutes have been around since the year dot .
...I like the line in Human Traffic that refers to what I just said: "I take the corporate cockshafting like the next person because I have to pay the rent".
actually from a copyright purpose on a one liner, it does, Talbot.
Shaney, I like that, physicians and prostitutes, may I add polititians
...and pimps.
lets also remember that both men and women and children of both genders are forced into prostitution by criminals of the most unpleasant kind. I suspect for the purchasers of those unfortunates, its more about power than about the wish for sex.
I think that is very true, woofgang, that puts it into four categories, mainly from the female perspective:

Organised crime - prostitution rings and slavery

Organised and bordering on crime, those who need the income

Legal and those who need the income

Legal and those who enjoy it, which I would think is not that large a category, numbers wise.

The central issue who are the pimps and their motives in this......
grasscarp/// I got a brothel in London closed down. ///

Got a job there, did you gc? ;)

I think poverty is the motivation for some of the vendors.
I used to stop in Northampton years ago & Knew a Prosie ( YES ) without her duties, called Margret, I was talking about this one night inside this pub & asked, why do you do it, her reply she had 2 children & Could I earn a £100 a night tax free, how can you reply to that, the Pub Chriterian, Ummmm has heard of the Pub as she lives in that area.
Because there's money to be made by it and because there's a demand for it.
Lol TWR...The Criterion was always known for the prostitutes that frequented it. I used to know the landlord.

The prostitutes I've met are all drug addicts.
The women I knew Ummmm was ok to talk to, she asked if I wanted Business, my reply no thanks, she got pulled a few times, she got belted a few times by her punters, I often said you are silly by doing this, her reply, my Kids / & money, how can you answer that?
We had a few prostitutes that used to use our pub. I remember my nan saying they were welcome but they weren't to try and drum up business. They often came in with bruises.

I didn't actually live in the same area as the Criterion. I lived on Abington Square. The flats not far from the Cri was the red light district.

Prostitutes aka escorts appear everywhere when it comes to hotels, bars and restaurants, even the best ones. I was in the bar of the Churchill Hotel in Portman Square, London, one evening and 'intervened' on behalf of a rather pretty and well-dressed girl who was having some problem with a Greek client.

It was fascinating to hear about her experiences, the money I suspected for drugs, 95 per cent of clients ok, a third of them just lonely and looking for companionship, not even sex. The 5 per cent though - this is a family channel. Her rate, if I remember, was well in excess of £1500 a night, her need being lifestyle as she claimed.

And before you question me, I have known the barman there since I was 16 and he gave me free drinks for quietly intervening and saving an embarrassing scene in his bar.
Serious question - there are hetero prostitutes, homosexual prostitutes but I've never heard of a lesbian prostitute -do they exist and if not why not?
I spoke on the phone to the (then) head of the English Collective of Prostitutes once, I felt like I was talking to royalty - she was very nice.
Well you know the old cliche. Men need sex to feel loved and women need to feel loved to want sex.

Maybe there is some truth in that.
Retro, yes they do exist.
