now all my emails and messages are going into facebook messenger, i did not sign up for this.

You signed up for a facebook account didn't you ? Expect them to grab everything they can about you then. You are their product/service and have little say.

That said there must be a box you have not unticked somewhere, surely ?

Why use Facebook messenger? It's a menace and completely unnecessary.
I deleted it from my phone and am thinking of doing the same for iPad

You can message from inside Safari browser, which is a lot safer and less intrusive than the app (or indeed any app)

lots of friends abroad use it, it is handy in many ways. no denying that
