On reflection, I must agree with your point.
I remember watching a documentary on the subject years ago, which advised that many women who have suffered this barbaric practice, have the mind-set that their daughters should not be immune from suffering it as well.
That's a cultural mind set that it will be seriously hard to remove.

That's a cultural mind set that it will be seriously hard to remove.

or - in the cultures in question, "not cutting pieces off pre-pubescent girls - problem". it's not so much a mindset of the parents visiting the practice on the offspring because they should not be immune, but that said offspring are virtually unmarriageable unless they've been cut. that's not so much the attitude of women per-se but of their society as a whole, and the community leaders - religious or otherwise - in particular, who are almost invariably male. whilst education is the preferred route to abolition, it's not so easy when the education itself implies criticism of the culture - an act that could very well book the teachers an early appointment with a large, steel, sharp weapon.

Without going into the 'how horrible' bit. I am not sure if it is, or isn't, better than Pakistani girls having their fathers 'breaking them in' before marriage. Sorry if I offend, but I assure you that I knew cases where that happened. At least this man isn't the trusted father figure.
