Rigorous (i.e intelligent) investigation into this man's "radicalisation" ought to start with possible local causes (mosque, family, friends, etc), and, only after discounting those, search for the esoteric explanations - on-line, read Dabiq, and so on and so forth. Ed's question suggested that he wanted to avoid the obvious common-sense first step.
