I got my ears pierced yesterday (4 on each side). I gave my piercer a $20 tip. He said thank you with a bit of a surprise look. At first I thought it was because the tip may have been too small. So I felt bad...I don't know. What do you all think? Thank you. (:

I don't do foreign travel and I tip - did so three times yesterday.
andy-hughes, //You need to get out more. //

Oh, I don't think so. I suspect it's those who don't get out who need to get out more.
I tip. Everyone I know tips.
Sign in a shop window, Ears pierced while you wait. I was going to drop them off and collect them later.
I go away on dance weekends with a group of friends and nearly always leave a tip for the chambermaid at the end of the weekend. I usually share with a friend and we usually leave £1 a day each. Don't think that's excessive as I certainly wouldn't want to do their job. My friend used to be a chambermaid and some of the stories she tells about guests (especially male contractors) eeeurgh! No thanks.
Most of us tip the person who washes or dries our hair at the hairdressers, waiting staff and taxi drivers. But it's not the norm to tip almost everyone as it is in America, and they get a bit huffy if it's not what they were expecting to get.

Who tips the toilet attendant in the UK? I went to the loo in New York, had no money on me so couldn't leave a tip for the lady. She gave me a filthy look.
Her tip plate was filled with notes.
Wages are not well paid in America in restaurants and bars etc so people depend on tips to top up their wages. Have been there three times now and I always tip 10% ( as long as it's good) If the service is really good it's always nice to give a little more.
I think 10% in America is looked on as a bit tight, cleo. Didn't you notice the frosty stares from the staff?
15% at least is expected.
Haven't been for about 7-8 years it was 10 then but probably like you say more now which I wouldn't mind giving.
