I'm searching for information on a children's play activity of the 1940's (maybe earlier and later) These were small pieces of paper about 1" square which were first soaked in water for a few minutes and then could be placed on another piece of paper, (or even a child's arm) and the image was transferred, that is why children called them "transfers".

our local shop sold them off a sheet like a stamp sheet, you could just buy one for 1d or as many as you wanted

I'm not sure about 1" ones, but Amazon do transfers or temporary tattoos.

we loved transfers..got them in lucky bags or on a sheet from the paper shop..we were not allowed chewie or bubble gum either..sob sob..coveted a Bazooka Joe many a time

My corner shop still sells 'Candy Sticks' which used to be called sweet cigarettes. You get 10 sticks in what looks like an old pack of 10 ciggies. Each one has a temporary tattoo or transfer in the pack.

The commonest pictures on transfers were flowers for girls, superheroes for boys

Murray I used to get a large Chocolate cigar every Christmas from my favorite uncle. It looked just like a real one.
Did you realise that the PC brigade have not managed to ban them?
