Banning The Burka- Would It Work?

As there hasn't been a new thread on burkas in the last hour I wanted to seek opinions on one point.
One argument raised a few times which i can understand is that it is a symbol of oppression of women. I think it often is. Some say they are forced to wear it against their will , some say they want to wear it and we shouldn't deny that freedom. I suggested a poll of Muslim women would give us more info but the idea was dismissed as i was told we wouldn't know if they were lying.

So, if a ban were introduced would it stop oppression? Would these men who currently force/pressure them to wear it let them go out without one or would they force them to stay indoors so that other men can't see their faces (in which cases they'd be even more oppressed) . Or would the men let them go out but insist they still cover up in public and risk arrest?

Also, from a practical point of view, could it be policed if some people still wear them? If a woman gets on a bus wearing one would the driver be expected to stop and call the police if she refused to uncover her face? Would a shop assistant be expected torefuse to serve them and call security or the police?
Do we know how well it's worked in other countries?

Barmaid, thank you for a lengthy and detailed response, appreciate it.
I started to type an equelly lengthy response but then realised that you basically said it all in your last sentence
//If we must ban the burqa we must also ban all other face covering in public//
While its not technically against the law to walk around in a balaclava with only slits for eyeholes, it wouldnt be long for me to get pulled over by plod and questioned if I did. I think that this disparity (one section of society can do this while others cant) causes more unrest than anything else.

Also
//The issue i have is that a ban precludes choice//
Prostitution and drug taking are also choices but remain illegal. Don't see the connection?

So why call me a Xenophobe?
Theland - // Forget multiculturalism.
There is only one culture.
British culture.
Conform or get out. //

Be careful - that loving Christian religion you set so much store by is making you go soft!!!
Theland, not often that I would defend you (or to be more precise your religious beliefs) but some of what Ive read on this thread aimed against you is indefensible and unwarranted.
Prostitution is legal, nailit, just how you go about it that might not be.
And as if by magic
//Be careful - that loving Christian religion you set so much store by is making you go soft!!!//
Theland religious beliefs have nothing to do with this.
^^ Indeed, nailit.
Because your own words damn you to being called one Theland, surely you can see that.
nailit - // Prostitution and drug taking are also choices but remain illegal. Don't see the connection? //

Neither of them are illegal in fact.
I stand corrected garaman :-)
Looks like I stand corrected a second time....
Where do you do all this objecting, Kval?

I try to hep in many ways, I write letters to my MP (a lot), I actively work against things and for things which I can do ( like taking in homeless people and working for charities etc) I petition, I occasionally march and I do practical things to help like I am a Mackenzie Friend for people sometimes. I do quite a lot of things, well as many as time and knowledge allow anyway.
Ah, I see...I thought you meant on here.
For all the ins and outs, toing and froing, back and forth, Is their ANYONE who believes that covering up your face is a good idea where the publics security is concerned?
Sorta makes cctv redundant.
Kvaldir - I am full of admiration for what you do. I wish circumstances allowed me to emulate. Sadly not.
But regardless of my beliefs, I can assure you I am not a Xenophobe.
I hate the alien cultures whose norms are enmity to mine.
British culture is welcoming for anybody who wants to join in, not lock themselves away in a closed ghetto and dress like chess pieces.
Theland, immigrants throughout history have always lived in ghettos for the firs few generations and kept to their own culture. That IS a societal norm which can be easily proved since records began. This is no different. If you aren't a xenophobe then please accept my apologies, but the things that you post are very distressing and questionable tbh, so perhaps you might consider rephrasing things somewhat for your own benefit?
Nailit you nailed it.
I remember the one piece face pieces from the Wizards Den, plastic glasses, eye brows, nose, moustache and beard, and wonder if they are still available? Could wear them to the bank with my water pistol?
