Given the unfairness in our society, (food banks, universal credit problems etc), what would you have our politicians do to urgently bring about a fairer society?

O dear God let me no inject a vein of realism into this thread.
This was the era of the £20,000 suit

wot dat den I hear you all chorus and
what IS he on abart dis time den? foo !

each gross £1 earned yielded 6d - and 40000 six punces are £500 cost of rather expensive saville row suit ( 1960s) - £200 was more like it. [my first suit was an expensive £15)

Given some of the attitudes here, I give up trying to argue for a fairer society.
Too many attitudes are rather selfish in my opinion.
No sympathy or empathy, but jumping on the few examples of benefit scroungers, who provide the motivation to continue to treat the deprived with such callousness.
"Love thy neighbour, (as long as it doesn't cost me too much!)"

Baldric - Have you been in their shoes?

Theland, no never been on benefits, never cheated the system, always supported me and mine.
Despise work shy cheats, and I am not referring to those who cannot work for some reason or another in that statement.
Arguing for a fairer society is like hoping Father Christmas is real. A waste of time and self delusional.
Its one thing to argue for things BUT its important to have an idea of whether what you are arguing for is possible.....

Baldric - I too worked all my life. 80 plus hours a week 7 days a week for years. Family lacked nothing.
Had 6 months unemployed in 1982. Very hard. It worse these days. After retiring I found myself on hard times, waiting to qualify for my state pension. Very hard times.
I totally understand what poverty is.
Scroungers exist, of course, but sitting in the job centre listening to stories, I assure you they are a tiny minority, that the media magnify out of all proportion.
‘Family lacked nothing‘

Excaept the presence of the father?
Except.

Zacs - You are quite right. I regret working all those long hours. But there is a story behind that. It was necessity.

Errr ... I'm not. If I lost my job tomorrow I've got enough put aside to ensure I survive for a good while.

That money wasn't given to me ... I EARNED it.
It is a fair society. Anyone can be an entrepreneur ie Richard Branson. The poorest might write a song as did Beatles, or book as jkRowling who was on benefits when she wrote Harry Potter. Benefit takers have the luxury of income to spend time with their family & friends and time for their imaginations to soar. Theyre all able to use cell phones & IT play games. Write one hit song, busk, be a linguist, play an instrument; all possible to earn a crust.

stop whingeing, use your time to learn!
Not sure that Branson is a good example, son of a barrister and went to private school
Theland, you admit scroungers exist, although how you can state there aren't very many based on talking to those in one employment agency and then extrapolate that to the whole country escapes me. Irrespective of how many there are, do you think these scroungers are being fair by accepting money with no intention of repayment?
