Is it weird that I take off my shoes while at a friend's house, when her and her family leaves theirs on?

Well obviously it's their house, but what I meant was would you find it strange that I took off my shoes at your house while you and everybody else had your shoes on. I'm a bit self-conscious about these things.

Not strange at all. I don't wear shoes in the house. They are by the front door.

A little, yes. One doesn't expect a guest to do so, unless, maybe, they brought their slippers with them.

Whatever makes you both comfortable....I take my shoes off indoors but don't expect others to do the same...not least because I probably won't have hoovered for a while and I have no ideas what hazardous materiels they may be stepping on!

why do you do it? I mean whatever floats your boat but I have got two dogs and the doors to the garden stay open most of the time so the floor is often not kind to bare feet....i wouldn't think you were weird but I would think you were foolhardy

Yes, it is a bit weird, imho. Unless, of course, you are specifically asked to do so. I've only ever been asked once when a friend had a new carpet laid.

People remove shoes at our house - even when told they dont need to. Downstairs most is wooden or tile as we had dogs, even carpeted lounge had the dog in it so little point in taking shoes off.

It's up to the individual I suppose. Do what you feel comfortable with. My brother does it for just that reason he says - to ease his feet out of shoes.

If they insist on you removing your shoes when you visit them, they should return the courtesy in your house.

Some people always take their shoes off indoors. Some don’t. My dad would find it odd if people took their shoes off in his house. He’d worry they were getting a bit too comfortable, and were about to move in.

We are like waterboatman and then some - we ask everyone to leave their outdoor shoes behind as they enter. Everyone complies and one or two bring slippers. Sadly, I know of no place (at least that I have been to) where I would want traces of the pavements and streets distributed around our house. I agree that you are showing good manners and consideration. On the other hand, I am aware that there are people who fastidiously keep their shoes on and will even lie on top of their beds still wearing them. The same people will presumably find taking off outdoor shoes as odd as guests undressing when they arrive. I have been to homes where I was distinctly uneasy about consuming their food for reasons of obviously poor hygiene.

It's derigeur at my brother and SIL's house to remove shoes, we have hard flooring downstairs so it's just a mop over once a week.

I always ask if the wish me to take off my shoes especially as I wear heels some of the time.
As for my own house I prefer people kept their shoes on!

Here it depends on the day of the week. I like visitors on a thursday to take them off (but I never ask) but by Weds I'm yelling "keep your shoes on, the floors are filthy cos the cleaners dont come til tomorrow".

If their floor is going to make your feet/socks dirtier than your shoes are going to make their floor, keep your shoes on - otherwise take them off.
