So, we're in the age of the easily offended.

However, why do people think they have some kind of right to not be offended? And also, why do people assume, because they are offended, some kind of action must then follow?

Regarding the exam question about calories, if anyone said they were offended, i'd look them in the eye and say, "So what?" "What do you want me to do about it?".

It's not a humans right to float through life having a happy, blissful, uncompromised life.

I say to you, if you're offended, especially if you're the only one.. Do try to just get over it.

Very little offends me. However i routinely come across people who are hugely offended by the merest event which they perceive as offensive.

I try and persuade people that in most cases it is not worth getting worked up about. Will it matter tomorrow? Will it matter in a week? Will it matter in 6 months? If the answer is "no" it's a waste of good righteous indignation.

I believe that the rise in social media has fueled the tendency for some to be offended, either for themselves or on behalf of others p- simply because they have a platform to express it which was not available to previous generations.

That can mean that the generation who saw the creation and growth of social media - mine in fact - are somewhat bemused by the way some people can get so het up about insignificant instances, which they make into personal crusades.

The fact is this - if you offer a freedom as a society, and that includes the freedom to be offended, then you will get people who will massively abuse it.

That's the nature of freedom - in order for it to function, it has to be open to misuse, which hopefully is in the minority, and doesn't cause too many problems day to day.

That means, to enjoy the freedom we all have to be offended if we feel so, then we have to learn to live with numpties who turn it into a profession, and generally attention-seek as if their lives depended on it.

Personally, I will live with the nonsense to enjoy the freedom, as I do with various other freedoms which we all enjoy, but which by the law of averages, will irk some of us some of the time.

People have become snowflakes because society, instead of telling them to put a sock in it and grow up, takes them seriously. I vividly recall posting something in R&S years ago about a ludicrous theory from a 17th century theologian which has never been accepted by the church – and for very good reason. Another poster, knowing nothing about the history of religion, claimed to be ‘deeply offended’, and that perfectly factual post was removed by an editor who was also ignorant of the history of religion. In short, we pussyfoot around the offended and the result is those who succeed in having their complaints taken seriously continue to seek offence, often where none exists – and they get away with it because they can.

Yes people would rather something not exist than have something that people might take offence to.. It's an odd form of pandering, it's like, this is a historical fact, if you're offended, then it can't be at me.
