.... and holocaust memorial exhibitions abandoned?

Is visiting these places just sick - or is it important to maintain them along with all the evidence they preserve ... lest we forget?

Have you visited such a place and, if so, your thoughts and impressions.

you like us all ken4155 are entitled to your opinion on this subject'
i think a memorial garden on the site you are talking about would be better, but the ghouls who go to see the ovens and gas chambers, and who take a perverse interest in all the atrocities, sadly somthing wrong with them, but then again thats just me.
Yes it is you Jordy, how dare you tar all visitors with the same brush. I'm Jewish. I visited and I will make sure our children visit when the time comes because there is nothing quite like standing there taking in the sheer scale of it all and tasting the same air that millions of victims tasted as they disembarked from what would be their final destination. It brings it home in a way that reading about it or pfaffing around in a 'garden' ever would. It was heartbreaking and terrifying, nothing whatsoever ghoulish about it Jordy or wrong with me (or anyone else visiting). Just because you don't understand something doesn't give you the right to insult people who do.
No, although Auschwitz as a tourist attraction (it even has TripAdvisor entries) is rather suspect.

Purely personal, but I find Memorials far more moving.

Just stand in front of the Judenplatz Memorial in Vienna. It'll make you shudder.
Nothing wrong with a Memorial Garden. A quiet place where one can reflect.
Unfortunately a Memorial Garden does not have the same effect as standing before a large mound with a notice stuck in it which says 'here lie 5000 dead'.
I find it extraordinary that people might condemn visitors to these places.
I have even seen the film “Auschwitz” criticised because it was “too difficult to watch” and “disturbing”
Dear oh dear
Good point Danny.
I guess I should visit one, but, somehow trying not to be just a tourist.
Anything he built or used, should be destroyed. And WE should build a memorial. But that s my feeling.
My son went on a school trip to East Berlin and visited a concentration camp. He was 14. We thoroughly approved. A very valuable part of education. I think they should remain as a reminder.
Hitler’s 1936 Olympic Stadium was used in two World Cups and is the home of Berlin side Hertha ...
Well that'll be half the infrastructure in the whole of Europe then Teacake...
if i have offended you calico please accept my apoligies,as you can guess i am not very articulate, and when expressing my opinion i am inclined to verge on the ridiculous,so sorry.
My feeling Calicogirl, not interested in a tit for tat.
No worries Jordy. Peace x

Teacake, nothing to do with tit for tat, I'm just wondering how you propose to dismantle train stations, autobahns, civic buildings etc etc etc in your quest to not use anything related to Hitler. It's simple fact it's not possible to eradicate everything to do with the Third Reich
.......not to mention every volkswagen! and possibly, Porsche!
...and don't forget Hugo Boss designed the SS uniforms... etc etc etc, so that's your nice aftershaves and clothes up the river.
No.
All le corbusier buildings demolished. The space programme in the US abandoned and cape Canaveral demolished.
....and the Russian Space program ZM.
No. I agree mostly with woof, except for "what we forget, we repeat". Normalisation is never helpful, it is better to think from scratch. However, it something has happened, denial is not useful.
