when you find out someone has been spreading malicious gossip about you?

In this case my mum told me a family friend, who lives in Italy, has been speaking ill of me to anyone who will listen and really personal, nasty stuff like I am 'uneducated', not of the same class as them etc! A lot of this is cultural Italian pretension (my father had an Italian mother) and gossip and talking about people behind their back is a national pastime there .... but for some reason I have been made a scapegoat here!

My boyfriend is livid that my mother even told me the rubbish that was being said as I didn't need to know and all she has done is stirred the pot more. He also thinks my mother told me this to demoralise and demotivate me and I agree with him because my mother is that kind of a woman

I do not have this family 'friend's' contact details to confront though I could easily track her down on social media and put her in her place - would you?

Or is it best to ignore it, seeing that she lives in a complete different country?

there is only one thing worse than being talked about

and
that
is
not being talked about
put it as a positive that some one in Italy even knows you and knows you well enough to talk about you
do not lower yourself to their level wait for them to rise up to your's
I agree with Johnny.
They are showing themselves up, not you. Ju
To finish.
Just ignore it. That will annoy them more because you haven't risen to the bait.
ignore..rise above it..show you have better class and treat it with the contempt it deserves.. sounds like jealousy
Old women can get a nasty streak and sometimes seek attention by causing arguments. I have experience of this in my own family with several old women. I would ignore it.
Walk away from the lot of them....you really don't need that rubbish...no one does. I would just tell my mother what I thought of her (for passing on upsetting gossip) and her family friend and then be very busy for the next 6 months so that I had no time to see or chat with them.
