Word For An Action
43 Answers
you know when someone kind of raises their fists and jolts/juts their head at a person - sort of like a threat, like saying watch it, or i'll hit you.
its kind of to make the other person flinch.
is there a word or phrase for that?
i was describing an episode of something to someone where they kept doing that and i couldnt think how to say it haha
thanks

i had no idea that feint had another meaning.
but yes it can be done deceptively when about to have a proper fistfight, or just a sort of a warning to watch out.
unfortunately if i said to someone 'they feinted' people would get a very different idea haha

roy - yeah, feint is not 'quite' right, but its the nearest thing i can see
the example i mean, is not diversionary or an attempt to distract or fool an opponent, its not a fighting tactic, its a BEFORE a fight tactic = its an outright declaration of 'watch it, im angry and im about to go for for, and batter you, so you better back off' -
it doesnt always lead to a fight and is never done in the middle of a fight, its always a sort of warning, to show the other person theyre in danger and to frighten them, also sort of to make them flinch with fright etc.

It's a while since I did any descriptive writing but sometimes it's better to describe what is happening rather than try to shoehorn in a word that may not be clear to the reader.
eg
As he stood before me,his shoulders tensed, his head fleetingly jerked to one side as his clenched fists twitched briefly at his side in an aggressive pose.
