This question arises from a thread in News about using tax payer money to fund the Arts.

In my opinion in that instance, the money wasn’t put to the best use, but in general would you be sorry if the arts were no more?

Oh Dear , someone doesn't like the truth.
what was removed?
I have so missed live theatre over the past few months and no annual outing for the family to the panto this year. Couple of bookings for 2021, can't wait. TV
The thing I miss most about Covid is live theatre. Most of my bookings have been rescheduled twice and two cancelled completely, both local amateur theatre groups. It’s heartbreaking. I miss exhibitions too. Of course I sometimes think money is wasted on pretentious ***, but that still leaves plenty for me to enjoy.
16.22 , The fact that Boris gave £100k to Jennifer Arcuri.
But £215 to the person mentioned in this post,.
Sorry read £215k not £215
Yes I would be sorry to see it go. I do wonder though how most people afford the cost of a theatre seat or a concert though with often eye watering prices. They must cost a fortune to run, so is it feasible - only if seats sell I guess.
No theatre or gallery here so doesn't bother me.
I love going to the theatre.
Whatever happens the art will survive somehow.
I went to Bath Theatre Royal the other day. It was lovely! Plenty of space to my side, no tall person or big-haired person right in front of me.
I know it can’t continue like that. They’re not making enough money, but it was good to see live action again, and with space!
I don't think a single penny of taxpayers money should be spent on supporting the arts, they should be self sufficient through profit, sponsorship, or philanthropy.
If supporting the arts is ethical, why not the pubs, cinemas and bingo halls?
What's the difference?
Oh yes of course! It feels like theres no joy or escapism at the moment. I listened to a street performer yesterday & felt quite emotional. So many bookings cancelled! Theatre, music & the arts have forever existed throughout history, it lifts our spirits.
i would be terribly sorry, seeing as how London has such a vibrant arts community
Manchester too emmie.
morning eleanor... of course..
Yes. I would.
