If you're looking for something more comedic, Robert Rankin seldom disappoints, plus I'm a fan of Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next novels.
The late Iain Banks (or Iain M. Banks if you prefer his Science Fiction books), has also a wide variety of very readable novels, often with fantasy elements, but always very grounded and human.
Another personal favourite is Jeff Noon, intelligent, punchy and highly imaginative, mainly with a Sci-Fi or Steampunk feel to them.
