Was this phrase, repeated three times, once used in certain cultures to legally end a marriage, or have I imagined it ?

It's probably best not to say it in jest ;-) https://www.newser.com/story/104163/husband-accidentally-divorces-wife-on-skype.html

Think it was prevalent in Jewish/Muslim cultures.
Believe it comes from Middle Eastern Muslim society but is archaic.
Under Islamic law, a man who wants a separation from his wife must say "I divorce thee" three times before going to a Shariah court.

As far as I am aware this declaration is not a feature of Jewish society.
You are probably right, Naomi, restricted to Muslims. The word 'talaq' comes to mind from my days as a law student.

Thanks everyone. So it seems that the practice is still in use ?

What puzzles me is whether there is a statutory requirement governing the time lapse between each repetition of the phrase, ' I divorce thee.' ie, Ten seconds ? Ten minutes ? Ten years ?!

Cheers. D
more than you ever want to know about talaq

I thought the wife cdnt divorce a man but it seems she can
and that the husband was duty bound to maintain the children - which doesnt seem to be the case

the exceptions and variations are enough to do your ed in.
Sunnis do things differently to Shia ( of course) and some practices are haram - and widely looked on as heresy
oh la dee dah!
you may be confusing saying divorce three times ( ever so fast or what) and the effect of divorcing the same wife three times ( golly!) - and to remarry she has to marry someone else in between

see article cited.

Blimey, PP ! Wot a rigmarole!

And what an achievement by you and Chris unearthing that info; l'm still wading through it out of courtesy to you both.

Thanks a lot. D
All I have to say just once is,'' Where's your purse?''
That doesn't end the marriage legally which you specified in the question, only in some countries.
