Time To Take A Step Back?

My parents used to never buy me new clothes. Always got hand me downs. I used to have to use my siblings old lunchboxes. We got years out of one plastic bottle I think I even used by siblings old PE bag. I used to walk to school never drove but if we had to travel by vehicle it would be a bus. sustainable fashion was getting your dads vintage sweater as a hand me down.

Is it time for the sake of the environment we took a step backwards?

Lunchboxes? Drive? Plastic bottles? You were lucky. There was no lunchboxes and cars and plastic bottles in my day! If you wanted a pennyworth of kali and a ha'penny spanish you had to walk home instead of catching the bus! If you were lucky you could save up old pop bottles and get a penny apiece for 'em.

Buses? There were no buses in my day and you needed ten bottles to get a farthing…..

I think a lot of people are. Vintage clothing is becoming very trendy and is very easy to find thanks to the likes of eBay and charity shops that sell online.
The government is bringing out a 'right to repair' law which means that manufacturers will have to supply spare parts for longer. Hopefully this will be extended to a lot more goods.
The charges for driving in to clear air zones are encouraging more people to car share or use public transport.

Recycling, upcycling and make do and mend are very much back in vogue - thankfully.

i used to walk 3 miles to and from school , and a mile was a mile in them days not like the miles they've got today

I was lucky - my older sister's gymslips weren't on the uniform list at my boys' grammar. No hand-me-downs from Dad - all too worn out.

The idea of walking to school! Our teachers used to just shout the lessons from school while we stayed at home, and we'd be lucky to hear it! And four-hour exams every three hours.

Clothes are kinda disposable now. When I go on holiday I stock up from Primark.

I grew up in hand me downs …. And as the only girl in a family of boys!

For things like gender specific school clothes mums used to swap items in the neighbourhood. So for eg, 3 houses away was a girl 2 yes older than I was - I’d get her clothes whilst her brother wld get my own brothers stuff.

It was however “different” in those days as where I grew up all the families were in the same boat. There was never any embarrassment about it at all

i had my brothers old clothes and had to roll up the bottom hem of trousers, eeded a belt to hold them up, even his old undies.. really
socks t-shirts prents had butter we had marg, would i go back absolutely..
