When and why did all this Prom business start? is it another Americanism? we were lucky if we came away from school with all our old school work.

Imported from America, first in UK about 20 years ago. My kids just had a school disco when they left.
I have known junior schools have them for their leavers. Blerdy nonsense

When I left school, it was Easter 1964. We just left. That was it. We were given a Cathlolic Missal, then walked, out never to go back. No parties, no proms. Nuttn!

Well at our boys school we just palled up with the girls school.

And now it’s at junior level with the girls dressing in long dresses with full make up and a limo to take them from one of their houses where they meet, to their school ,aged 11 yrs old ! It happened here on Wednesday with some friends kids, also what’s with nursery kids dressing in a mortar board and cloak when they leave and go to reception in the ‘big school’ ?

I had one when I left school. although it wasn't a huge deal it was called prom. This is 31 years ago

Wouldn't have worked too well at my school either, all boys private school and there was no corresponding girls school either.

All we had were large sports days - regimented of course.

I saw a limo and a load of very young girls/boys outside a school yesterday. I wondered why, now I know!

I went to an all girls school and we had a leavers disco in 87.

We had a school disco at the end of junior school, and a ball with the boys' school at the end of Senior (literally, I mean :-))

My daughter had one when she left school- she's 35 now - but it was nowhere near as expensive and ridiculous as now. Her dress was £25 from TKMax.

we didn't have anything, even a disco. But I was talking to a woman a couple of years ago who recalled that her school had a prom - and the band they hired to play were the Beatles.

left primary early 60's and grammar early 70's. In both cases we just left without fuss.

I suppose it must have been about 1962, Bobbi, otherwise it have been beyond the funds of even the poshest school. It would have been a bit costly to hire them after Sergeant Pepper unless they were all at a loose end one Saturday night, roaming the streets and looking for something to do...

Not heard a dicky bird from any of them - except one when we were coincidentally employed by the same firm.

My sister on the other hand is still friends with a good number of her old schoolmates.
