His message was, basically, that it might be better if spent more time loving each other and less time killing each other. Jesus was, clearly, the first hippie, maaaaaan.

Though I must admit I never had the chap down as a socialist.
He was crucified (so the story goes) because the people preferred a robber (Barabas) to being preached at.
Thought it was because the Pharisees didn't like the competition and grassed him up to the Romans.
Because he was an anarchist and agitator who rocked the boat. Threatening the status quo and the fiscal rewards of the privileged few. Even though he proclaimed’render unto Caesar’ etc.
david small: "Threatening the status quo" - whatever you want!
are you gonna roll over lay down and take that david?
so what are you proposin bob?
Because he went against the then rulers. He was, therefore, a socialist revolutionary who not only threatened their political power but also their (and the Jews's) religion. He did say, 'Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's', which should really have pacified the Romans, but that did not save him from the powerful religious establishment - and the Romans saw more advantage in appeasing them.

Hmmm. I've just typed that post-haste. I'm amazed, but it seems to (in some way) sum up what I feel about what happened. Open, as ever, to correction, of course. :)
20.53 Davebro, Then Barabas must have been a Tory then , and things have not changed to the present day.

In my opinion Jesus was sentenced to death on a charge of insurrection. He wasn’t a socialist - he was a nationalist. The story of Barabbas is a construct that has succeeded throughout history in holding the Jews rather than the Romans responsible for Jesus’ death.

(Incidentally, I don’t believe Jesus died on the cross).
Neither do I naomi24.
naomi - // (Incidentally, I don’t believe Jesus died on the cross). //

Why not?
Why not? Predominately because he died far too quickly - and he reappeared three days later.
David, why don't you believe it?
Sorry for not answering your question naomi24, I went to sleep. My response is similar to yours. The circumstances of the crucifixion, spear piercing the side, not a fatal wound. The disappearance of the body from the cave. The convenience of the Roman guards getting intoxicated. Jesus being seen by Thomas who examined the wounds. Too many things to elaborate here at this time. I think an arrangement was reached and his life conditionally spared upon promises of self exile.
A brief and inadequate summary clumsily expressed but, I think you will get my drift.
David, we do think along the same lines on this. No broken legs either - which was handy.
I think he's still alive and runs a chip shop where he employs Elvis.
