All this hype regarding BLM and black history month I have recently noticed that 8 out of 10 TV adverts seem to have a disproportionate non white presence.

Just a casual observation.

Hopefully it will level out. I think the concern now is that it is in danger of going too far the other way though. A happy medium would be good where eventually companies do not feel obliged to recruit specific people in order to meet diversity targets and no one notices what colour the actors are.

My brother and his wife (Cuban immigrant) are mixed race. Married 50 years...back when it wasn't seen so much. One of our aunts dropped all contact with brother after they married.

It's ludicrous when they have a family with a white mum / a black dad / a white kid / a couple of mixed race kids & and an Asian-looking grandpa sitting down to dinner together!

If they are showing mixed race families (I know they exist & I don't object) I think they should use 'actual' families which I'm sure they don't.

Pasta I fail to believe that the percentage of non white actors equates to the number of white actors, so by the law of averages not choosing people because of their colour would give a much more genuine spread of actors throughout the industry. You surely cannot deny that currently adverts and programmes are deliberately selecting non white actors to be seen as being non discriminatory when in actual fact that is exactly what they are.

Totally agree, apg. While people are still noticing what "colour" actors are... we clearly haven't acclimatised them yet... maybe we need more?
It goes without saying, with everything really, that once the pendulum has stayed in one direction for so long.... it always swings too far the other way before it finds a balance.

Well I deny it. Or at least, I don't think it is being "discriminatory"
Maybe they want to be more representative.
And let's face it the people you get in these ads are usually spear-carriers (whoops didn't mean that), extras. One person is pretty much as good as another so putting a bit of diversity in seems to me to make a lot of sense.

I imagine the ads are targeting NHS staff; it sounds as if they've got the proportions right.

2 actors were chatting while waiting to be auditioned. One said "I hope we get the chance to work together sometime", the other said "No chance of that we are both white, male & straight"!

But, ichkeria, it's not just 'a bit of diversity' - it's got to the point where there are vanishingly few non-BAME actors in adverts now

Probably reflects the proportions in the bigger cities less so the more rural communities.
