If you are talking about the UK, simply a cultural thing. If you go back a few centuries beer would have been the safest thing to drink.
Alcohol particular wine features in the Bible and is part of Judeo-Christian culture. In moderation it presents few problems
Go to an expat housing complex in Saudi Arabia and you will find they almost all have the same hobby - home brewing.
I had a strong G&T there. It tasted wonderful because it was illegal. It had that thrill similar to being served in a pub underage.

I dont know but I am not fond of the taste of Alcoholic drinks. I did bit my bullets and drunk bottles of beer once just to get drunk. Wine is OK but it still has the taste of Paracetamol, I dont know why...
