Apparently 2 million people have been disenfranchised because they don’t have an acceptable form of photo ID, and have not applied for a Voter Authority Certificate.

But remember this has all been done to stop voter fraud.

At the last local elections within the UK, there were 7 allegations of personation fraud, which resulted in zero cases in which any evidence was found – so money well spent on a problem that does not exist.

I have my OAP bus pass to hand, no problem. The only people who should have any problems are women who have married but not changed their passports/driving licences etc.. (I'm in that group), but there has been more than ample time to get a FREE identity voting card from the local authority. It's been well advertised.

I know that the official figures about fraud are small, but I put my hand on my heart and swear that I knew of massive postal voting scams (that should really be tightened up) and heard of many, many impersonations (Hijabs etc.) which were spoken of as the norm.

We need ID for library books, picking up parcel at post office, to get into work each day, to get a blue badge, going on holiday abroad, using travel Concessions, speaking to my bank branch about my account, my niece needs it to buy a bottle of wine or to get lunch in her college

If you were designing a voting system and suggested not using ID as anyone could pretend to be someone else you'd be laughed at.
Truth is we simply don't know how much fraud there is but it makes sense to have a simple check.

Hymie, don't you need photo ID to vote in your beloved EU too. If so why are you complaining when we do it here when you love the EU rules so much. They have given everyone a chance to apply for photo ID free here and if they didn't bother then that is up to them.

I've lived in this town virtually all my life, and I have to prove who I am? Anyway, when I pick up the voting paper later, I'm sure it will be soft, strong and extremely long.

2005 and dawn of voter ID was nigh.

This was a court held under the Representation of the People Act and the last one was 1867. So rare before then. I think people were surprised at how it had been converted ( cheating that is! ) into undustrial production
