Myfanwy

Kind o’er the kinderbank leans my Myfanwy,
White o’er the playpen the sheen of her dress,
Fresh from the bathroom and soft in the nursery
Soap scented fingers I long to caress.

Were you a prefect and head of your dormit'ry?
Were you a hockey girl, tennis or gym?
Who was your favourite? Who had a crush on you?
Which were the baths where they taught you to swim?

Smooth down the Avenue glitters the bicycle,
Black-stockinged legs under navy blue serge,
Home and Colonial, Star, International,
Balancing bicycle leant on the verge.

Trace me your wheel-tracks, you fortunate bicycle,
Out of the shopping and into the dark,
Back down the avenue, back to the pottingshed,
Back to the house on the fringe of the park.

Golden the light on the locks of Myfanwy,
Golden the light on the book on her knee,
Finger marked pages of Rackham's Hans Anderson,
Time for the children to come down to tea.

Oh! Fullers angel-cake, Robertson’s marmalade,
Liberty lampshade, come shine on us all,
My! what a spread for the friends of Myfanwy,
Some in the alcove and some in the hall.

Then what sardines in half-lighted passages!
Locking of fingers in long hide-and-seek.
You will protect me, my silken Myfanwy,
Ring leader, tom-boy, and chum to the weak.

Have the decency to credit the poet, John Betjeman

Question Author

Sorry, Barry. Yes. it wasn't me what wrote it.

It's a beautiful poem, Atheist.

Maybe you could have a go? 😬

Question Author

I don't think my fantasies would be appropriate here, especially because I don't have Betjeman's sweet innocent duckling grin.

Question Author

Or his way with words, of course.

Aw,you are so much, much cleverer than the rest of us uneducated oiks on here Atheist. Its a wonder your head doesnt burst with all that super intelligence you have.Aye,right.

Mention of a bicycle reminds of a short coupler:

Sometimes I think that I should like

To be the saddle on a bike.

^Couplet

Not with me sat on it, you wouldn't

Nah,i prefer-"S*xual *ntercourse started in 1963,between the Lady Chatterley trial and the Beatles first LP"...a much better poem.

Question Author

ynna: As I said, it wasn't me what wrote it! I'm not clever; I'm a fifth columnist, clown, commie virtue-signalling idiot. Bonne fin d'journee ma p'tite. Bise!

And still they stood and still the wonder grew

That one small head could hold all that he knew.

A rose by any other name just wouldn't.

@15.01.Nah,dont bother with your nonsense Atheist, not only  are you the cleverest poster on AB,you are the cleverest person that ever lived on the face of the earth. Now away an bile yer over-sized ego.Numptie.

I'm no aware of thebackground to this post, ynna, (and I've been away on holiday) but it seemed to me to be rather a nice post by Atheist.... I assume that he was responding to something.

Some uncalled-for remarks, I thought.  Atheist is a writer, intelligent and will relate on that level. This category is for that purpose.  Hope Ihaven't upset anyone.

Question Author
