What is the etiquette for funeral cars for the family

how big a family?
You don't want to overcrowd the cars, but having a car each might look a bit stupid!
Next of kin (spouse and/or children) in first car, siblings next, and if you wanted cousins they would follow.
If it is a child, the parents would be in the first car.

Thanks for your answer- I thought it was this.
However if there are inlaws where do they go?
My mother passed away and thre are four children, three spouces and three grandchildren but the cars only hold seven so who goes where?
one suggestion is that the children and their spouces go in the first car and the grandchildren in the next

Phillco, my condolences on your mother's passing.

What are the ages of the grandchildren? If there are young ones (teenagers or younger), it might be too stressful for them to be alone in their own car. Maybe you and your siblings in the first car, and spouses and grandchildren in the second. Young ones shouldn't be without an adult handy in such a stressful time.

(I'm assuming, of course, that spouses wouldn't feel slighted at not riding in the first car. I've been to a fair number of funerals for my husband's family, and I'm amazed at how political these can get sometime.)

Your funeral director should have standard recommendations - and if the seating order comes from him/her, there's less a chance that someone will feel slighted. Best wishes to you and your family.

I agree with Willa about funeral director.
I would keep families together - eg pasrents and children in the same car. either eldest child, plus his family i nfirst car etc. or sometimes elder daughter. In laws come after children, but ddepending on how close, do they require a car? Might prefer to be independent.
Sorry about your mother, but I hope she had a good innings. My family always work on the principle that funerals are more fun than weddingsbecause everyone is on the same side! eg, remember the good days and laugh.
