3 syllables matey

p-kip-si

p - as the non-capital letter, how a child would say it.
Kip - as in a short nap or sleep.
si - as in the northern expression 'si the later'

hope that helps.

Click here for an American dictionary web-page which offers two possibilities. As Poughkeepsie is an American place-name, they should know.
I cant open the link above, but I would read it as

"Poo" as in Winnie-the-..., "kip" rhymes with dip, and "see"

The name derives from a Native American word (roughly U-puku-ipi-sing), meaning "reed hut by the water"
They sound about right - Ross (in Friends) meets a girl from there and he pronounses the placename the same way as sifellis
The link works for me but here is the actual address...

Once there, you will find a red loudspeaker-symbol. Clicking on it allows you to hear an Ameican actually say the name.
Eh dear...I give up! That connection doesn't work either! Perhaps if you just type it into the address-bar you will get there. Good luck!
Last effort. Click here to get to the Merriam-Webster dictionary site. Once there, type the name into the slot and click. Then click the red loudspeaker. That'll work, insh'allah!
Sorry QM I think it has more to do with our internal net nanny than anything else. We often get website refusal, even something simple such as having the word org in them I presume net nanny thinks we are looking for orgy?! It is a bit of a pain since my work involves a lot of contact with international organisations.
Surely it's pronounced poh-keep-si and not si-fell-is!

AB works its magic once again - thanks everyone esp Quizmonster - got there via the M-W dictionary site as you suggested!!
Poo kip see
My husband's niece lives in Poughkeepsie; many in his family live in towns around the area. It's pronounced:

Poe (as in Edgar Allen) - KIP - see

If one's diction is particularly lazy - or if one is in a hurry - it's pronounced:

Puh - KIP - see
oops - that Puh is a P with a schwa (sp?) sound, like d'uh.
Defintely NOT Poo like winnie-the
It's Puh like pub without the b
And the Americans have the cheek to complain about our town names eg Loughborough!!

Loughborough - ah yes, so that must be Loe-berg then lol !!
