scots and english

A young Dutch friend of mine has just visited Scotland and found a lot of anti-English sentiment. I want to ask is there an English Scottish friendship society I could join to try to stop all this nonsense ?

brionon, I sympathyse with you. I once had a scottish girlfriend (she had lived in England for some years).She took me up to Glasgow to visit her folks and it was a nightmare.Although her father and stepmother were friendly eneough, we made the mistake of watching Braveheart of all things.This was when she turned native.I had to sit through 3 hours of listening to what b*stards the english were.I was 300 miles from home and she had the national express tickets.When we came home it seemed to carry on, like being back in scotland had awakened this racist attitude towards the english in her.We split soon after.Never again will I date a scot........(though it has to be said, Scotland is a lovley country and they have every right to be proud of it)

dont think so, english people and that includes the media very often forget to refer to the scottish welsh or irish, numerous times on t v just lately ive heard people referring to the queen of england,

I wouldn't worry about it brionon. it's a Scottish thing isn't it. Those of us south of the border don't give it much thought.

(cue some angry scot - 'so you don't give it much thought eh? typical arrogance! - and you wonder why we hate you!, blah blah blah' - yawn)

We dont hate you, im a scot, married to an english lady, we have lived in both Scotland + England, she didnt experience any ill feeling when we lived in Edinburgh and she wore her England rugby top with pride. Likewise, its the same when I wear my Scotland top down here in sunny Leicestershire, we have some good natured banter whenever Scotland play England at anything, but thats all, good natured.
Anyone who takes that film to heart (excuse the pun) has deeper issues, it was a film with very little histoical truth, if any.
Its just over 300 years since the Act of Union, we should all be pals, in fact, why dont we start an English Scottish friendship society here?

I'm not anti anyone either - not on the basis of geographical location of birth.
My philosophy is that there are good people and tw@ts spread in equal proportion throughout every country, race and sex on earth, and that anyone who believes otherwise is probably one of the tw@ts.

Eloquently put Ludwig! And it can also be said that most of the racist comments I've seen on this site have come from (proud) English people. In fact a friend of mine was at a recent footy match in Scotland and commented how when one supporter made a racist slur the rest of the folk nearby, supporters of both teams no less, told him there was no need for it. Very encouraging if you ask me.

Ah the fine words "fought and died for...." etc

Us scots sing them with such force and pride!.....i had an english boyfriend who hated being in company that sang that song......

"sent them homewards to think again!" he hated it til i pointed out that once the engish got home they did think again and came back with a better plan and won!!! lol

nothing to do with your question just find it fun to drop it into conversation after hearing Flower of Scotland! it makes for quite a talking point on choices of scottish pride in the song. x x x
